What would be a good beginner motorcycle to get? April 6, 2012 at 8:00 am
I would like a motorcycle that is fast enough to go on the highway. I would like it to be a street bike.
*ANY* 250cc class motorcycle or scooter will be: light, easy to ride, capable on the freeway.Chose: Dual-Sport, Sporty, Standard, Cruiser, or scooter; used or new.As long as Japanese or European, 250cc class, it would be a good motorcycle for a beginner *or* an old hand.
The Yamaha Vision mentioned above (XZ550) isn’t such a bad choice compared to what’s available new. 60 degree counter-balanced, water-cooled v-twin.
While Yamaha recommended that it not be ridden for extended periods at high speed (60mph+), it was capable of handling the highway just fine.
A rather mild mannered bike, it was very good for around town.
It was also good for leaving the competition at the light (it was required one night).
Not exactly a beginners bike. Torque twist took a bit of getting used to (shaft drive).
Flat spot at 4000rpm was never completely sorted out – I found it a very minor issue.
Depends on what you want to spend. You want at least a 500cc bike to do the highway, a 750cc would be better. I have always been a fan of the Honda bikes, they are well balanced and handle very well. Kawasaki also makes a nice bike. If you want to spend a couple more dollars go with a Harley Sportster, They are dependable and hold there value over the long term so when you’re ready to move up you’ll get a better deal. There’s a reason you don’t see many old Suzuki or Yamaha’s on the road, They don’t last and they cost big $$ to fix! Good luck
Well, you really want a bike that is comfortable to you. Taller people are going to have different needs than shorter, as well as heavy vs. slim. However, I always point to the honda shadow and nighthawk for starter bikes. They’re a good solid bike that will get you up to speed without any trouble. They handle simply, and aren’t too awfully powerful. The Yamaha XZ550 is a good bike for those thinking of getting a sport bike later on for similar reasons. Best of luck to you. Remember to wear your safety gear. Look for the Snell Institute sticker on your helmets. They certify the safest helmets in the world.
any second hand 250cc bike will do…
baby ninjas..250cc top out at 100MPH… fast enough for the freeway..even the old CB250 hondas from the 70s top out at 80MPH…
Honda 250 nighthawk is really just capable of handling what you want.
